Dr Camelia Quek
Senior Scientist

Dr Camelia Quek is a NHMRC Investigator Fellow and a computational oncology scientist who is an expert in clinical multi-omics analytics and data integration, including gene expression, single-cell multi-omics, and spatial profiling, translating complex data into clinically meaningful insights. Dr Quek originally did a first degree in molecular biology at the University of New South Wales (University Medal) before moving on to do a PhD in neuroscience and bioinformatics at the University of Melbourne (Sawyer Medal). Since joining Melanoma Institute Australia in 2016, Dr Quek’s research has made significant advances in understanding tumour ecosystem and immune microenvironment in melanoma patients treated with immunotherapy using gene expression signatures, single-cell immunogenomics profiles and spatial multi-omic features to guide clinical decision-making. Dr Quek is a lead computational biologist driving single-cell and spatial multiomics research studies. Her research focuses on understanding the immunogenic expression profiles in patients treated with cancer therapies, key proteins and biological mechanisms driving cellular identity and heterogeneity within tumour and immune microenvironment, and how tumour heterogeneity shapes disease progression. Dr Quek’s research contributions have been recognised nationally and internationally including the 2022 CINSW Premier’s Awards for Wildfire Highly Cited Publication (co-first authors, Cancer Cell 2019) and 2021 10x Millennium Science Start Single Cell Award. Dr Quek is a regular Invited Speaker and was awarded Best Oral x2 and Best Poster x3 for several occasions at major conferences. Dr Quek is a chief and associate investigator on prestigious grants including NHMRC, NSW Health and CINSW. Beyond research, Dr Quek serves as an Editorial Board Member for Communications Biology (a Nature Portfolio journal), an Associate Editor in Molecular Carcinogenesis, and Special Issue Editor in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. She is also a Steering Committee Member of the University of Sydney Cancer Research Network, and an Ambassador for the European Association of Cancer Research. Passionate about translating research findings into clinical and industrial applications, she actively collaborates with clinicians and industry partners to advance biomarker discovery and therapeutic innovation.
