ESMO 2025

Leading Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) clinicians and researchers are in Europe to share latest research findings and clinical updates with international colleagues as we continue our efforts to reach zero deaths from melanoma.

The 2025 ESMO - European Society for Medical Oncology Congress has just concluded in Berlin, Germany. It brought together clinicians, researchers, patient advocates, journalists and healthcare industry representatives from all over the world to drive advancements in diagnosis, treatment and survivorship across all cancers.

MIA’s Associate Professor Ines Pires da Silva jointly hosted a special symposium at ESMO analysing emerging new treatment options beyond immune checkpoint blockade for melanoma. She also delivered a mini oral session titled, ‘Clinical and multi-omics predictive model of resistance to neoadjuvant anti-PD1 in melanoma’, based on findings from a research paper involving 14 authors from MIA.

‘If we are to ultimately save all lives from melanoma, it is vital that we share knowledge and collaborate with colleagues from around the world,’ Associate Professor da Silva said. ‘Research is leading to rapid development of new and more effective treatments, as well as a better understanding of which patients may be resistant to certain treatments, and so this international collaboration is critical.’

Only a few days after the conclusion of ESMO, MIA representatives will travel to The Netherlands for the 2025 Congress of the Society for Melanoma Research (SMR). This melanoma-specific annual conference will again see MIA centre stage in sharing latest breakthroughs and research focus areas.

‘It will be particularly interesting to see the impact over coming years of the next phase of research into neoadjuvant, or pre-surgery, immunotherapy, as this holds immense promise for saving lives across the whole cancer spectrum,’ added MIA Medical Director, Professor Georgina Long AO.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
